CSO/SEAI 2024

Overview

Primary energy is the total energy consumed across the whole economy — heating, transport, industry and electricity generation combined. Ireland has historically been heavily reliant on imported fossil fuels, though renewable electricity generation has grown substantially since 2010.

Indigenous Production vs Net Imports

ktoe, 1990-2024

Context

Ireland's gross available energy was 14,637 ktoe in 2024. Import dependency stands at 79.8% — among the highest in the EU, reflecting Ireland's lack of significant domestic fossil fuel reserves following the decline of Kinsale gas and peat extraction. Indigenous production has been rising again since 2016 on the back of wind and other renewables, reaching 2,963 ktoe in 2024. Renewables made up 30.3% of fuel input to electricity generation in 2024 (note: this is fuel-input basis, not generation output basis — SEAI's official renewable electricity *generation* share is typically higher, around 40%+).
